Yana
Co-Founder and Pharmacist
Growing up in Ireland after her family relocated from Bulgaria in 2001, Yana always knew she wanted to study pharmacy. She started working in a pharmacy at 15 and never looked back. But when the time came to apply, the reality hit hard. The points required in Ireland were out of reach, places were limited, and competition was fierce.
Rather than give up on her dream, Yana applied abroad. She went on to study Pharmacy at the University of Brighton and later completed an MBA at the University of Bradford. Looking back, she calls it one of the best decisions she ever made. MedVenture Abroad was born from that experience.
Erine
Co-Founder and Dentistry Student
Erine always wanted to study dentistry. When she looked at the entry requirements in Ireland, she made a decision quickly: she was not going to fight a system stacked against her. Instead of applying in Ireland, she went straight for Bulgaria. She researched the universities, sat the entrance exam, and got in.

Pleven is a quieter city with lower living costs. If you prefer a close-knit academic environment without big city distractions, Pleven is a compelling choice. It is also the only Bulgarian university offering both a February and an October intake.

Do I need to speak Bulgarian to study there? ▼
No. All courses we work with are fully taught in English. Your classes, exams and learning materials are all in English. You will pick up some Bulgarian naturally over time, but there is no requirement to know it before you arrive.
Are Bulgarian medical degrees recognised in Ireland and the UK? ▼
Yes. Bulgarian medical universities are EU-accredited. Graduates can register with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) and the UK General Medical Council (GMC) and work across the EU. You follow the same registration process as any graduate returning from a recognised European university.
Do I need CAO points or HPAT to apply? ▼
No. Bulgarian universities do not require CAO points or the HPAT. Entry is based on your Biology and Chemistry grades from secondary school, along with a Biology and Chemistry entrance exam. You do need solid grades in these subjects, but the process is far more accessible than Irish medical school entry.
How much does it cost to study abroad? ▼
Tuition fees vary by university and course. Medicine ranges from approximately €7,500 to €10,000 per year depending on the university. Dentistry is approximately €10,000 per year at Plovdiv. Pharmacy ranges from €6,000 to €6,200 per year. Veterinary Medicine starts from €5,520 per year at Trakia. See our Universities page for the full 2026/27 breakdown.
What is the cost of living in Bulgaria? ▼
Bulgaria is very affordable compared to Ireland or the UK. Shared apartments typically cost between €150 and €300 per month, private apartments €300 to €450 per month. Groceries run around €200 to €300 per month, dining out is €5 to €10 per meal, and public transport is just €15 to €20 per month. All figures are approximate.
Do I need to take an entrance exam? ▼
Yes. All universities require an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry. Some also include an English language test. The exams are multiple choice format and are held multiple times per year, giving you more than one opportunity to sit them. We provide a preparation pack with sample papers and guidance as part of our Guided and Full Support packages.
When should I apply? ▼
For October 2026 entry, applications typically open in early 2026. We strongly recommend getting in touch as early as possible so documents can be translated, legalised and submitted, and so you have enough time to prepare for the entrance exam. The earlier you start, the smoother the whole process will be.

What airports are nearby? ▼
For Plovdiv: direct flights from London. From Dublin, fly direct to Sofia Airport and then it is approximately 1.5 hours by road to Plovdiv. For Pleven and Sofia: Sofia Airport is the main hub with excellent connections from Dublin and London. For Varna: Varna International Airport has good summer connections. For Stara Zagora: Plovdiv Airport is approximately 90km away. We can help arrange airport transfers as an add-on service.
Can my parents come with me when I move? ▼
Absolutely. Many families travel out for the first week to help their son or daughter settle in. We can help with travel planning, arrival logistics and accommodation so everyone feels supported. We also offer a dedicated parent support call as part of our Guided and Full Support packages.
How are payments handled? ▼
MedVenture Abroad fees are paid upfront via secure online payment. We accept bank transfer, credit and debit card, and PayPal. Our fees cover our services only and do not include university tuition, accommodation or travel costs.
What if I change my mind or cannot go? ▼
We handle this on a case-by-case basis. Some fees such as document handling may be non-refundable once work has begun. We will explain our full refund policy clearly during your consultation before you commit to anything.
